Common Questions

common question image
    • The Magellanic penguins we track reach sexual maturity around age three, though they typically won’t breed until age four or five.

    • Magellanic penguins feed on a variety of small fish, krill and squid. As soon as their chicks hatch, one of the parents will head out to sea to hunt for food, returning to feed their chicks the partially regurgitated remnants. This way, the chicks absorb nutrients faster than eating food whole.

    • A group of penguins (and their chicks) is referred to as a colony or rookery.

    • Penguin chicks appear much fluffier than their parents, sometimes with a gray or brown coat of feathers. As they grow, their baby feathers are replaced with the sleek black and white feathers of adults that allow them to dart through the water and remain virtually waterproof.
