Common Questions
common question image

Why are red pandas tracked?

“Given their mountainous habitat and elusive nature, red pandas are difficult to spot in the wild. Tracking these arboreal mammals provides valuable insights into their movement ecology and behavior. Such information is critical for effective conservation planning.”

How are red pandas tracked?

“The radio telemetry relies on the very high frequency (VHF) signals emitted by the transmitter attached to the collar, which need to be tracked manually using an antenna. The researchers have to be on the ground to locate their frequencies. On the other hand, GPS telemetry uses satellite systems to record locations at certain intervals, which can be tracked remotely without being in the field.”

Does tracking harm the red pandas?

“Available studies have reported no or negligible harm to animals while tracking them using these devices.”

Why is the red panda endangered?

Red pandas are endangered primarily due to habitat loss as a result of human development and livestock herding. Other contributing factors include free-roaming dogs, disease, poaching, illegal wildlife trade, lack of available food (bamboo), and climate change. Increased frequency of droughts, snowfall, and flooding is causing shifting vegetation zones and unreliable habitat availability.

How many red pandas are left in the world?

There may be as few as 2,500 red pandas left in the wild, a 50% decline in the last two decades.

Where does the red panda live?

Red pandas live in high-altitude forests in Nepal, Bhutan, India, China, the southern edge of the Himalayas in Myanmar, and nearby mountains farther east.

What species is a red panda?

The red panda is a mammal and the only member of its own evolutionary lineage! Though not related, they do share common traits with raccoons, weasels, and skunks.

How long does a red panda live?

Red pandas typically live for 8–10 years in the wild with some reaching as many as 15 years of age. In captivity, red pandas have even lived into their 20s!

My plush arrived a little misshapen, what do I do?

Your plush had quite the long journey to get to you! If it appears squished from lack of legroom during shipping, give it a good fluff to help it return to its normal, cuddly shape. Still need help? Email us at support@myfahlo.com.
