Tracking provided in partnership with

AZA SAFE’s conservation partner American Prairie envisions a fully restored prairie ecosystem in Montana’s plains, achieved in part by the bison’s restoration as a keystone species. I got this to support conservation effort. I was reluctant at first having seen many critical reviews, however it turned out to be in good condition. I received Iinniihpiiaakii and followed her journey across Montana. The stones also look beautiful. I'd rate it 10 stars if I could.

My Roam bracelet, I purchased and got a free one. These are my eighth and ninth bracelets that I have purchased from Fahlo. Each bracelet brings me wonderful new adventures and insight to the conservation efforts that are being taken to preserve these wonderful animals that are going extinct if we don't alter our path in the future. I have learned so much more about these animals and how they live and survive in a world occupied by mankind. What a wonderful idea!!!

So beautiful!! Goes beautifully with my snow leopard bracelet as well. The stone feels like the perfect weight, and they feel so silky and smooth. I think the bison is perfectly carved as well. Only other thing to say is that sometimes hair will get caught on the bracelet and it does hurt a tiny bit but only like a little pinch. Not often at all though. Again, would definitely recommend as the design is as beautiful as the cause. Five stars!

Common Questions
common question image

Why are bison tracked?

"Bison are tracked to understand their crucial role as ecosystem engineers, aiding in grassland restoration, improving soil health, and boosting biodiversity. It also helps manage herds for conservation and allows us to study their social behaviors and facilitate rematriation efforts (restoring the land to indigenous stewardship), providing vital data for ecology, tribal resource management, and even livestock science.

Tracking also shows how grazing, wallowing, and movement create diverse plant life, enrich soil, and provide habitats for other wildlife, benefiting the entire prairie ecosystem. These monitoring efforts reveal how bison move through habitats, helping to identify ideal areas for bison reintroduction and manage landscapes to mimic historical patterns. Researchers, conservationists, and herd managers study group dynamics and how social bonds influence movement, while continuing to monitor herd size, health, disease, age, and sex ratios, informing decisions on population management."

How are bison tracked?

"Bison are primarily tracked using modern, unobtrusive technology like solar-powered GPS ear tags and satellite-linked collars, allowing researchers to follow individuals and monitor herd movements, examine individual behavior, habitat use, and herd dynamics in real-time.

These methods are used to manage herds in conservation areas and national parks. Other methods include aerial surveys to locate and monitor free-roaming herds in places like Alaska. Additionally, ear tags and microchips, as well as individual characteristics such as horn shape, are used to track individual animals, especially during herd, or “round-up” procedures. Finally, drones have been used to gather data on movement and social groups."

Does tracking harm the bison?

"No, tracking does not harm bison or affect their natural behaviors."
